As the world shifts towards renewable energy options, Apple has directed its attention towards the rapidly growing Indian market.
A new leaf for Apple
Apple’s interest in renewable energy has been flourishing since 2020, when the company pledged to reduce its carbon footprint in the coming decade.
The Apple Watch Series 9 and SE are the company’s first carbon-neutral products, signalling a shift in focus for Apple as it progresses towards its 2030 carbon neutrality goal, aptly named ‘Apple 2030’.
Apple has also acknowledged the role electricity plays in its carbon footprint, especially through manufacturing and charging its products. As a result, it has called for clean electricity and carbon neutrality from its global suppliers. The company promised to match every watt of charging electricity for phones with clean energy by 2030.
The Indian market
Apple’s operations in India have been growing for years. With the transition to clean energy, it has embarked on a joint venture with CleanMax, a prominent renewable energy developer in the country.
CleanMax’s focus on solar power led to Apple investing in six rooftop solar projects with a total size of 14.4 megawatts. This localised eco-friendly energy should satisfy energy demands for Apple’s corporate offices, two retail stores, and future projects.
Water needs are not being ignored, with Apple initiating freshwater replenishment work such as restoring aquifers and rivers in high-stress areas, including the Indian states of Telangana and Maharashtra.
Apple’s prominence has led many companies, and even governments, to take note. The UK government wants to transition from boilers to heat pumps by the same 2030 deadline to reduce emissions. More information on air source heat pumps Gloucester and across the country is available for renewable energy services companies such as gsmlimited.com/services/air-source-heat-pumps/gloucester.
India isn’t the only country to attract Apple’s attention, with suppliers in China being connected through the China Clean Energy Fund.
Combined with solar power investments across the US and Europe, Apple is showing a strong commitment to its cause on an international scale and setting an example for the world.
